Ossuary (old) in the cemetery (cad. 1,488): inscription by order of 23 November 1987

Origin and history

The Ossuary of Ancy-Dornot is a religious building located in the cemetery of the commune of Ancy-Dornot, in the department of Moselle, in the Grand Est region. Built mainly in the sixteenth century, it illustrates the architectural and funeral traditions of this period, where the ossuary was used to group the exhumed human remains to free space in cemeteries.

The ossuary was registered as historic monuments by order of 23 November 1987, thereby recognizing its heritage value. This type of monument, common in medieval and modern Christian regions, reflects the importance attached to the management of burials and the collective memory of the deceased. Although the sources do not specify the details of its construction or its possible sponsors, its official listing underscores its role in local history.

The location of the ossuary, close to the church or within the cemetery, was typical of the spatial organization of the villages in modern times. These buildings were used not only for practical purposes, but also as places to collect and meditate on mortality. Their presence reflects the evolution of religious and social practices in Lorraine, a region marked by intense cultural exchanges between the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of France.
