Ossuaire (C 975): inscription by order of 10 December 1927
Origin and history
The ossuary of Mégrit is a 17th-century religious building in the commune of Mégrit, Brittany. This type of monument, typical of the region, was used to preserve the exhumed bones of parish cemeteries, in a context where funeral spaces were regularly reused. Its architecture and function reflect the religious and social practices of the time, marked by a strong presence of the Church in everyday life.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 10 December 1927, the ossuary of Mégrit is now protected for its heritage interest. The accuracy of its location is estimated as "passible" (note 5/10), and is identified under cadastre C 975. Property of the municipality, its current condition and conditions of access (visit, use) are not specified in the available sources. The Breton region, in the 17th century, was characterized by a rural economy and a highly structured society around parishes, where ossuaries played a symbolic and practical role in the management of burials.
