Ossuary (former) (Case C 2553): classification by order of 6 December 1990

Origin and history

The Ossuary of Niedervisse is a funeral monument built between the 4th quarter of the 15th century and the 1st quarter of the 16th century. Located in the commune of Niedervisse (Moselle, Grand Est), it bears witness to the religious and commemorative practices of the late medieval period. Ranked Historic Monument by order of 6 December 1990, it now belongs to the commune and retains a heritage value marked by its architecture and past use.

The ossuary, at this time, was mainly used to group the bones exhumed from the cemeteries to free space, while reminding the living of the fragility of the human condition (mento mori). In regions such as Lorraine, these buildings were often associated with parish churches or abbeys. Their presence also reflected the community organization around places of worship, where the management of burials was a practical and symbolic issue.

The building, located under cadastral reference C 2553, is located at 22 Rue du Ban Saint-Jean, according to the coordinates available. Although its exact location is considered "passable" (note 5/10), it remains a rare vestige of this typology in the department. No information is provided on its current accessibility (visits, cultural use) or possible characters related to its construction or history.
