Ossuary near the church (cad. 1,148): by order of 13 August 1990

Origin and history

The Boustroff Ossuary is a funeral monument located near the village church in the Moselle department (57). Dated from the 16th century, it bears witness to the religious and commemorative practices of that time, where the ossuary was used to gather the exhumed human remains of cemeteries to free space or preserve them in a sacred place.

Ranked a Historic Monument by order of 13 August 1990, this ossuary is now owned by the commune of Boustroff. Its location, although documented (12 Rue des Roses), suffers from poor accuracy according to available sources, with a note of 5/10 for the reliability of the coordinates. This type of monument often reflects the community organization around places of worship, as well as the importance attached to the memory of the deceased in the rural villages of Lorraine during the Renaissance.

Available data, from the Merimée database and Monumentum, do not specify the conditions for access to the public or any contemporary uses (visits, events). The ossuary, however, remains a significant heritage marker for Boustroff, a commune integrated in the Grand Est after the 2016 territorial reform, formerly linked to the Lorraine region.
