Origin and history
The Ostel de Fourest, located in Montluçon in the Allier department, is a noble hotel built in the 15th century. This monument is distinguished by its wood-paned facade, adorned with a window with a braided cladding of a shield, as well as a wooden stall and a stone turret with a screw staircase. These architectural elements reflect the high social status of its first owners and their integration into the local economic fabric.
The hotel was built by Philippe de Fourest, recipient of the Montluçon chestnut between 1460 and about 1498. His son, Robert de Fourest, inherited it in the early 16th century. Like other officers of the Dukes of Bourbon, Philippe de Fourest combined his administrative duties with commercial activities, with several working houses (sales stalls) near the wheat market, at the back of his hotel. This mix of roles illustrates the versatility of local elites under the Old Regime.
By 1580, the house had passed into the hands of the Barthonnat family, made up of doctors, notaries and lawyers, who also served as business agents for the Mercier, Sieurs de Bien-Assis. This change of ownership marks a transition to occupation by liberal professionals, reflecting Montluçon's social evolution. The house was partially classified as a historic monument in 1935, protecting its facades and stone turret.
The architecture of the Ostel de Fourest, combining wood and stone, bears witness to the constructive techniques of the 15th century in the Bourbonnais. The presence of a window with a braid and a shield underscores its aristocratic character, while the back stall reminds of its anchoring in the commercial life of the city. These details are a representative example of the urban hotels of the time, both noble residences and places of economic activity.
