Origin and history

The dread of the Couplets is a former military building built in the early 19th century, located in the commune of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, Normandy. It is located more precisely in the territory of the former commune of Équeurdreville-Hainneville, now integrated in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin. This work is part of a set of five dreads erected to strengthen the defence of Cherbourg Square, a strategic port on the west coast of Cotentin.

The dread was registered as historical monuments by order of 24 March 1994. This protection covers the entire building, including its small and ditches, highlighting its heritage importance. The site is identified in the Mérimée base under Cadastral code BN 238, and its approximate address is located near the Résidence Admiral le Bigot in Équeurdreville-Hainneville.
