Eight ancient funeral steles (cf. G 19): classification by decree of 8 September 1978
Origin and history
The ancient funeral steles of Aimargues are a collection of eight ancient funeral monuments. They are located in the cemetery of the commune of Aimargues, in the department of Gard. These steles, together with a tombstone, bear witness to the funeral practices of the ancient period in this region. Their presence in a contemporary cemetery highlights the historical continuity and preservation of these remains over the centuries.
These steles have been recognized for their heritage value and have been listed as historic monuments since 8 September 1978. This formal protection ensures their conservation and development. Depending on the available sources, in particular the Merimée and Monumentum base, their precise location is indicated as the 12 B Chemin de l'Aprivado in Aimargues. Their state of conservation and accessibility to the public are not detailed in the sources consulted.
The region of Aimargues, located in Occitanie (formerly Languedoc-Roussillon), is marked by a rich history dating back to ancient times. Funeral steles, typical of Roman or Gallo-Roman practices, were used to honour the deceased and mark their burial. These monuments provide an overview of the customs and social organization of the local populations of the time, although the sources do not specify the individuals or families to which these steles were dedicated.
