The Roman mosaic known as the Battle of the Roosters (cad. A 490): classification by decree of 25 June 1958
Origin and history
The archaeological site of the Clos de la Tour in Fréjus is a collection of remains dating from the 2nd century, period of construction confirmed by the available sources. It is distinguished by the presence of a Roman mosaic, known as the Battle of Roosters, which constitutes the main protected element of the site. This mosaic, classified as Historical Monument by decree of 25 June 1958, illustrates the artistic and cultural importance of Fréjus, former Julii Forum, during Roman Antiquity. The site is located at 237 Rue Jean Bouin, in the Var department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
The precise location of the site, although documented in the Merimée database, is considered to be of very poor quality (level 0/10 according to precision criteria). No additional information is provided on any other architectural elements or artifacts discovered on site. Available sources (Monumentum, internal data) do not mention the exact extent of the excavations or details of the original uses of the site beyond the mosaic.
Fréjus, founded as a Roman colony in the 1st century B.C., was a strategic and commercial crossroads in Narbonese Gaul. Mosaics, such as the Clos de la Tour, usually adorned domus (urban houses) or public buildings, reflecting the social status of the owners or the richness of the city. This type of decor attested to local craftsmanship and Mediterranean cultural exchanges, characteristic of the Romanized cities of the region.
