Book of Galéasson (Case J 310): inscription by order of 20 January 1989
Origin and history
Galéasson is a military fortification built on the island of Porquerolles, dependent on the town of Hyères in the Var. Owned by the French State, it was registered as historical monuments on 20 January 1989. This strategic site, designed to control the Grande Passe, illustrates the importance of coastal defences in the region.
The battery was erected in 1811 on a pristine land, then reorganized between 1846 and 1850 with the addition of a crenellated tower serving as a shed. The date of 1848, engraved on the front door, marks this phase of work. Initially planned to be downgraded, it was finally put back into service in 1930 as an annex to the high battery of the Medes, with a restoration of the reduced.
Architecturally, the work consists of a full floor and a small tower shaped covered with a terrace, flanked by three crows braces. This type of construction reflects the military techniques of the time, adapted to coastal defence needs. Today, it bears witness to the military history of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
