Origin and history

The P.C. Reboul is a shallow underground quarry, transformed into a command post (P.C.) by French troops in early 1916, during the First World War. This strategic site was designed to house military operations, with a large-scale, four-window wall, protecting the interior from the weather. This wall, decorated with a cornice and a pediment decorated with olive and oak leaves, symbolized both peace and strength, reflecting the values carried by the soldiers.

The interior pediment of the monument bears several inscriptions, reflecting the passage of the military units stationed there. Among them, Colonel Reboul, the last mentioned commander, left his name at this command post. The quarry, classified as Historical Monument by order of 23 November 1999, illustrates the adaptation of existing infrastructure to urgent military needs during the conflict. Its sober but symbolic architecture makes it a remarkable vestige of the French military history of the Great War.

Located in Saint-Christophe-à-Berry in the department of Aisne ( Hauts-de-France region, formerly Picardie), the P.C. Reboul is an example of the underground arrangements made to secure the staffs. Although its exact location is approximate (estimated at 5/10), its listing as Historic Monuments makes it a protected site, representative of the defensive strategies of the time. The traces of the units that occupied the site, engraved in the stone, offer a direct testimony of their presence and the logistical organization set up during the war.
