Origin and history

The courthouse of Bethune is a public building located at 161 Place Lamartine, in the department of Pas-de-Calais. This building, owned by the department, was registered as a Historical Monument by order of 9 August 2018. The inscription covers the entire palace, with the exception of contemporary enlargements, thus emphasizing its heritage and architectural importance.

Béthune, the city of Nord-Pas-de-Calais (now Hauts-de-France), has long been marked by a rich judicial and administrative history. The courthouses in this industrial region played a central role in the social and legal organization of local communities. Their presence reflected the authority of the State and the structuring of the judicial system, which was essential to regulate the tensions and economic activities of the time.

The precise location of the monument, confirmed by GPS coordinates and the Merimée base, attests to its anchoring in the city centre. The accuracy of its location is assessed as "a priori satisfactory", which facilitates its identification and heritage valuation. The building, still in operation, embodies both a public service and a historical legacy for the city of Bethune.
