Origin and history
The Palais des Sports, des Arts et du Travail, located in Narbonne, Aude, is an emblematic building built during the first half of the 20th century, specifically in the inter-war period. Its reinforced concrete architecture, marked by a stripped neo-classical style, reflects the influence of Auguste Perret, a pioneer architect of this material. The building embodies a characteristic aesthetic rigorism from the 1920s to the 1930s, where functionality blends with geometric sobriety.
This palace is part of the social context of the Popular Front (1936-1938), when public projects aimed at democratizing access to culture, sport and leisure for popular classes. Its ambitious architectural programme, combining sports, arts and work, illustrates this desire for collective emancipation through accessible infrastructures. Perretian inspiration is also manifested by clean lines and a rational structure, breaking with superfluous ornamentation.
Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 11 July 2002, the palace is fully protected (cadastre BH 22). Owned by the commune of Narbonne, it now bears witness to the architectural and political heritage of the inter-war period, while remaining anchored in local life. Its official address, 1 boulevard Frédéric-Mistral, confirms its integration into the urban fabric of Narbon, although its GPS location is considered to be of poor accuracy (note 5/10).
