Origin and history

The Ducal Palace of Nevers, built in the 15th and 16th centuries, was the residence of the Counts and the Dukes of Nivernais. Built on a hill overlooking the Loire, it replaces an old fortress for Jean de Clamecy. Its two later towers, dated from the 15th century, contrast with the Renaissance changes operated by the Clèves family, including the honorary staircase in the central turret. The facade, framed by polygonal turrets, illustrates a harmony between the ochre proportions and the d'ardoise roofs, while a treed esplanade leads to the river, offering a remarkable panorama.

In 1810, Madame de Cossé-Brissac, heir of the last Duke, gave the castle to the City and the Department. The building, divided between the town hall and the court until 1850, underwent radical changes to adapt its distribution to the needs of the judiciary. The interior decoration and facade, restored with sculptures by François Jouffroy, differ from the original state. The changes of the 19th century, although functional, profoundly altered the initial arrangement, before a restoration program in the 1980s restored the palace to its former glory.

The excavations of 1988 reveal unique artifacts, including a 14th-century artillery piece ("widow powder chamber"), now preserved at the municipal archaeological depot. A symbol of Nivernais history, the palace now houses the city hall, a tourist office, exhibitions and an aquarium dedicated to the fish of the Niger. His political and memorial role culminated in 1993, when François Mitterrand pronounced the eulogy of Pierre Bérégovoy, former Mayor of Nevers, in front of his walls full of history.

Ranked a historic monument in 1840, the Ducal Palace embodies the architectural transitions between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Its restoration, initiated by Pierre Béregovoy in the 1980s, allowed to reconcile medieval heritage with contemporary additions, such as the monumental west staircase or the lateral entrance of modern materials. These interventions underline the desire to preserve a heritage while adapting to public uses, thus mixing times in a unique architectural dialogue.
