Origin and history

The Palais Rameau was built between 1875 and 1879 thanks to the legacy of 300,000 francs of Charles Rameau, president of the Lille Horticulture Society. The latter demanded that a building bearing his name be erected to organize floral, artistic and musical exhibitions. Inaugurated on 22 June 1879, the palace quickly became a versatile place, hosting both canine shows and banquets.

Designed by architects Auguste Mourcou and Henri Contamine, Palais Rameau is distinguished by its eclectic style combining local tradition (bricks and stones) and oriental influences (more details). Its facade, adorned with two bell towers and extended by a cast iron greenhouse, makes it an emblematic monument of the city of Lille of the 19th century. The sculptures, such as the fronton d'Albert d'Arc or the bas-reliefs of the seasons by Cordonnier, add to his prestige.

Over the decades, the palace has had various uses: in 1882 it housed an exhibition of industrial art with a national impact; In 1897, he was the framework for the election of a Muse Lilloise in tribute to the poet Alexandre Desrousseaux, in the presence of Gustave Charpentier. During the Second World War, it served as a reception place for repatriated prisoners and as a space for school examinations (1930–1960). In 1948, he even hosted the Gestapo de La Madeleine case.

Ranked a historic monument in 2002, the Palais Rameau received partial renovations during Lille 2004. Since 2015, it has been hosting the Solid Since 2021, the Junia student group has been conducting a project to transform into an incubator dedicated to agriculture and sustainable food, combining research, production and awareness.
