Origin and history

La Croix du Pal is a monument located in the commune of Montpezat-sous-Bauzon, in Ardèche. It is precisely at the Pal Pass, an emblematic place of this mountainous region of south-eastern France. This monument was officially recognized as a Historic Monument by a registration order in January 2024, thus highlighting its local heritage importance.

Monuments of this type, often crosses or calvaries, were traditionally erected at crossroads, on public squares or at the tops of the passes. They served as landmarks for travellers, religious symbols for local communities, and sometimes marks of ownership or commemoration.
