Group of dwellings in wooden strips, south-east of the church Saint-Michel: inscription by order of 18 October 1941
Origin and history
The log houses of La Ferté-Saint-Aubin constitute a group of traditional houses located in the city centre, near the Saint-Michel church. These buildings, characteristic of medieval and Renaissance architecture, are protected by a decree of inscription dated October 18, 1941. Their precise location, between numbers 15, 27, 29, 31, 124 and 125 of Rue Saint-Michel, reflects a preserved historical urban planning, although the current geographical accuracy is considered poor (level 5/10).
This type of habitat, widespread in the small towns and towns of the Centre-Val de Loire region, reflects the techniques of construction in common wood sections between the Middle Ages and the beginning of the modern era. These houses, often intended for artisans or traders, played a central role in local economic and social life. Their assembly near a church, as is the case here, suggests a medieval urban organization where places of worship structured the inhabited space.
Registration for Historic Monuments in 1941 underscores the heritage value of these buildings, although available sources (such as Monumentum) do not provide details of their individual history or potential owners. Their preservation makes it possible today to study the lifestyles and constructive know-how of the people of the region before the industrial era.
