Origin and history

The site of the plots containing 17 burial terres in Arboucave is a major archaeological vestige of the Protohistory. Ranked a Historical Monument by order of 4 November 1971, it illustrates the funeral traditions of this period in southwestern France. These mounds, located in the Landes department (Insee Code 40005), are protected under Cadastral elements E 165 to 173.

The location of the site, although documented (address: 40320 Arboucave), presents an accuracy considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10), according to the criteria of the Merimée database. Arboucave, attached to the arrondissement of Mont-de-Marsan and to the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (formerly Aquitaine), thus offers a material testimony of protohistoric societies.
