Origin and history
The plot containing archaeological remains of Aigues-Vives is located in the Gard department, in the Occitanie region (formerly Languedoc-Roussillon). These remains, located in the enclosure of Pataran Cemetery, cover a period from the High Empire to the Middle Ages, showing continuous occupation over centuries. Their historical importance led to their designation as historic monuments on 18 May 1973.
The remains are distributed over cadastral plot D 163 and 447, and their location is estimated to be "a priori satisfactory" based on available data. Their discovery sheds light on the architectural and cultural evolutions of the region, from Roman antiquity to the medieval period. The precise address, Route Nationale 113 in Aigues-Vives, allows to situate this site in a wider geographical context, close to Nîmes.
Although the sources mention their classification as a historical monument, little detailed information is available on the excavations or specific artifacts discovered. Their presence in a cemetery suggests a reuse of funeral spaces or a superimposition of uses over time. This site illustrates the historical stratification typical of the occupied territories since the Roman era in Occitanie.
