Origin and history

The passage of the 82 Quai des Chartrons is a building built in the 2nd quarter of the 18th century, probably by the architect Jean Laclotte for the Barreyre Bordeaux merchant. This building is distinguished by its structure in two bodies separated by a courtyard, with an elevation of two square floors. Its peculiarity lies in its northern part, which rests on a vaulted passage of ridges leading to an arch in basket handle at Barreyre Street. The sober but elegant façade features segmental arched lintel bays and wrought iron railings, crowned by a strong cornice.

The narrower southern part houses the stairwell. The set illustrates Bordeaux civil architecture of the Enlightenment century, mixing functionality and aesthetics. The monument has been partially protected since 1991, with an inscription of the facades and vaults under the title of Historical Monuments. Its location, on the quay des Chartrons, the former heart of the wine trade, reflects the opulence of Bordeaux traders of the time, of which Barreyre was a representative.

The exact location, although documented (82 Chartron dock), is poor in accuracy (note 5/10), with an approximate GPS address indicating number 83. This minor gap does not alter the heritage interest of the site, witness to the urban planning and economy of Bordeaux in the 18th century. Available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) confirm its status as an iconic building, although not accessible to the public today.
