Origin and history

The Marolle Bridge, located in Montargis, Loiret, is a curved metal construction built in 1891. It crossed a 88-metre pass over the Briare Canal, with a height of 5.50 metres under key. Its riveted apron rests on stone abutments, and a central street lamp adorns the work. The structure, arch-to-pane type, has steps in its most curved parts to facilitate pedestrian traffic.

The bridge was built in the Forges and Fonderies de Commentry in Fourchambault, a renowned 19th-century industrial site. It is part of a series of similar works built for the canals of the region, such as Combleux (channel of Orleans) and Briare (channel of Briare). Its style and technique reflect the metallurgical engineering of the time, combining functionality and industrial aesthetics.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 3 May 1999, the bridge is now owned by the municipality of Montargis. It is located in the continuity of Boulevard des Belles-Manières, marking a link between industrial heritage and local urban planning. Its state of conservation and its precise location (13 boulevard des Belles-Manières) make it an emblematic element of the Montargisian landscape.

The structure, with its riveted apron and stone abutments, illustrates the metal construction techniques of the late 19th century. The central floor lamp, fixed at mid-term, adds a functional and decorative touch, typical of the urban developments of the period. The bridge remains a testament to the history of river transport and industrialization in France.

Its registration as Historic Monuments underscores its heritage importance. It is representative of the curved bridges built for the canals, a technical and architectural heritage shared with other works of the Centre-Val de Loire region. The GPS location and cadastral address confirm its anchoring in the urban landscape of Montargis.
