Origin and history
La Croix de la Passion is a cross of paths located in Monségur, in the Gironde department, New Aquitaine. Established in 1808, it marks local history in commemoration of a religious mission to atone for the death of the curé de Cours, guillotined in 1794. It is distinguished by its iconographic richness, representing the Arma Christi (instruments of the Passion): crown of thorns, nails, ladder, flagellation column, and other symbols related to the Crucifixion and the Last Supper.
The cross is located east of the city, on Avenue de la Porte-des-Tours, facing the monument to the dead. Its base and wrought iron structure, made by local blacksmith Mr. Roy, make it a remarkable example of early 19th-century religious craftsmanship. It has been listed as historic monuments since 24 January 2011, protecting the entire structure, including its stone pedestal.
The sculpted details include elements such as the spears of the Roman centurions, the cock of Saint Peter's denial, or the chalice and rays of the Resurrection. These motifs, arranged harmoniously, illustrate a desire to convey a strong spiritual message, while at the same time testifying to the artistic techniques of the time. The cross remains today a symbol of Monsegur's religious and historical heritage.
