Origin and history
The pastry shop located at 180 rue du Temple, in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris, occupies the ground floor of a building built in 1870. Its ceiling, decorated with a fresco depicting the goddess Ceres, dates back to the late 19th century and bears witness to the influence of mythological motifs in the commercial settings of the era. This place, both pastry and tea salon, illustrates the evolution of the spaces dedicated to Parisian sociability between the Second Empire and the Belle Époque.
In 1928, the architect Boucher remodeled the tea salon in an Art Deco style, incorporating Masonic symbols such as the triangle, reflecting the aesthetic and cultural trends of the 1920s. The façade, meanwhile, was rebuilt in 1940, marking a last architectural transformation before its protection. Since 1984, the front and interior decoration have been included in the Historic Monuments, thus preserving a commercial, artistic and social heritage.
This monument embodies the urban and cultural changes of Paris, where the crafts, art and social networks (such as freemasonry) cross. His inscription in the title of Historical Monuments underlines his importance as a witness to the architectural practices and lifestyles of Paris between the 19th and 20th centuries.
