Origin and history
The Miremont Pastry is an iconic building located in the heart of Biarritz, more precisely at 1 bis Place Clemenceau in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department. Its interior decoration, dating from the late 19th century, is a remarkable testimony of the craft of the period, mixing mosaics and studded patterns. These decorative elements, preserved in their original state, reflect the architectural and aesthetic refinement that characterized the bourgeois establishments of this period.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 1 October 2006, the Miremont Pastry owes this protection to the exceptional heritage value of its interior. The inscription specifically concerns the shop and its decor, thus stressing the importance of preserving these spaces as material witnesses to local history and the evolution of the decorative arts in New Aquitaine. This classification is part of a broader approach to preserving regional heritage, where the Pyrénées-Atlantiques have many protected buildings.
Although available sources do not mention the precise origins of its creation or the artisans who worked on it, the Miremont pastry embodies Biarritz's prestige at the end of the 19th century. At that time, the city, then booming thanks to the influx of an easy clientele attracted by the sea baths and the mild climate, saw the proliferation of luxury establishments. These places, like pastry, played an important social role, serving as meeting points for the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie in the resort.
