Origin and history

The Paul-Belmondo Museum was created on the initiative of the sculptor's children, Jean-Paul, Alain and Muriel Belmondo, who donated 259 sculptures, 444 medals and nearly 900 drawings of their father to the city of Boulogne-Billancourt in March 2007. These works, including sketchbooks and preparatory works, were provisionally stored at the Thirty Years Museum before being exhibited in the Buchillot Castle, an 18th-century madness rebuilt in the 19th century by James de Rothschild.

The castle Buchillot, classified as a historic monument but abandoned, was restored externally and interiorly renovated between 2007 and 2010 for a cost exceeding 2.7 million euros. Initially scheduled for late 2008, the opening was postponed several times before taking place in September 2010, during the European Heritage Days. Emmanuel Bréon, curator and expert in Paul Belmondo's work, played a key role in the establishment of the museum, thus responding to the wish of Jean-Paul Belmondo.

Designed by architects Karine Chartier and Thomas Corbasson, the museum offers a contemporary journey with clean black and white lacquer spaces. The sculptor's workshop is reconstructed, and tactile visits allow blinds to touch resin reproductions. The welcome is marked by Young girl on the march, an emblematic sculpture. The museum also organizes temporary exhibitions, such as Germinations by Philippe Desloubières in 2018.
