Origin and history

Paul Deschanel's monument in Nogent-le-Rotrou pays tribute to the politician (1855-1922), former deputy of the district and president of the Republic. It was inaugurated on 24 October 1926 after a public subscription launched in 1925 by a committee including personalities such as Gaston Doumergue, Raymond Poincaré and Marshal Pétain. The city contributed 4,000 francs, stressing its commitment to Deschanel, "representative of Nogent for more than thirty years in Parliament".

The marble statue, the work of sculptor Ernest Dubois, represents Deschanel in a dominant position, turned towards the town hall. The stone base, designed by architect René Patouillard-Demoriane, is adorned with two allegorical figures draped with an antique: France and the Eloquence. The monument, located at the crossroads of Sully and Villette-Gâté streets, has retained its original location despite a demanding urban environment (elevated, crossed), limiting its visibility.

Signed by its authors at the base of the pedestal, the monument is part of a series of collaborations between Dubois and Patouillard-Demoriane, such as the monuments of Eugene Fromentin (1905) and Jean Gluton (1911) in La Rochelle. Unlike other regional works, it has not been moved and remains a testimony of the tribute to Deschanel, "brought up to the supreme judiciary as head of state". Its inscription as a Historical Monument in 2025 protects the whole: statue, base and steps of the old fountain.

The inauguration, carefully organised by the municipality (mentioned in the DM of 4 October 1926), reflects the symbolic importance of the project. The choice of site, facing the city hall, highlights the link between Deschanel and local politics. Despite criticism of its readability in a complex urban space, the monument remains a historical and artistic landmark, marked by the academic style of its creators.
