Origin and history
The Perrinelle Habitation, located in Saint-Pierre in Martinique, is a former estate known as the "Château des Jésuites". This monument, whose remains date back to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, bears witness to the presence of the Jesuits in the island as early as the eighteenth century. The archaeological excavations revealed significant ruins, including those of the castle and its outbuildings, as well as a village of partially exhumed workers.
The elements protected by the inscription under the Historical Monuments (Decree of 26 July 2004) include the entire plot containing the exposed ruins, as well as the remains not yet excavated, forming an archaeological reserve. The site, now owned by a private company, thus retains a heritage value linked to its colonial and religious past.
The location of the Perrinelle Habitation, although documented (address: 5103 F Perinelle, Saint-Pierre), remains approximate according to the available data, with a geolocalized accuracy assessed as "a priori satisfactory". This site illustrates the economic and social history of Martinique, marked by agricultural exploitation and the influence of religious orders during the colonial period.
