Origin and history

The Saint-Pierre de Pezu church, classified as a Historical Monument since 1926, has an atypical structure composed of a rectangular vessel divided into two unequal parts by an axial pillar. To the west, a square bell tower, once fortified as evidenced by the trace of an old drawbridge, dominates the building. The oldest remains, dating from the early 12th century, include part of the northern wall of the early nave and the western facade. This original nave, narrower than the present, suggested a south wall aligned with the current location of the north wall of the bell tower.

In the 16th century, the church underwent a major extension: the south wall was rebuilt as an extension of the bell tower, thus widening the nave. The structure, remarkable, has carved entrances of crocodile heads or monsters, while at the base of the central entrance, two angels support a shield. These decorative elements reflect the craftsmanship and stylistic influences of the Renaissance. The building, a communal property, preserves architectural traces of two distinct periods, mixing Romanesque simplicity and late Gothic ornaments.

The western facade, initially isolated, was modified by the addition of the bell tower to the south, whose defensive function (bridge-levis) evokes a historical context marked by local or regional tensions. Today, St. Peter's church embodies both a religious heritage and a witness to architectural evolutions between the Middle Ages and the modern era. Its inscription in 1926 highlights its heritage value, while its location in Pezu (Loir-et-Cher) makes it a key part of the historical landscape of the Centre-Val de Loire region.
