Origin and history

The Petit Hôtel Chassignet, also known as Mareschal de Sauvagney, is a private hotel located at 12 rue Pasteur in the Boucle district of Besançon. Built in the late 16th century (circa 1570-1580), it underwent several reconstruction campaigns, notably in 1746 and 1772, the latter led by architect Claude-Antoine Colombot for the rear communes.

The building is structured around two courses: a "U"-shaped main house and "L"-shaped commons. The facades on the street, made of cut stone, contrast with those of the courtyards, in coated bellows. A corner lodge, once covered with iron-white, marks the entrance. The facades and roof have been protected as historical monuments since 1927 and 1942.

The hotel has changed owners over the centuries: inherited by the Mareschal de Sauvagney family in 1636, it was redesigned in the 18th century with the addition of a staircase of honor and a monumental gate. In the 19th century, a dwelling was added to the courtyard. The modifications of the 20th century removed the sills of the bays on the first floor.

Historical sources mention a first construction at the beginning of the 16th century, but no apparent vestiges of this period are preserved. The countryside of 1570-1580, 1746 and 1772 shaped the current appearance of the building, combining Renaissance and classical styles.
