Origin and history
The lighthouse of Fromentine, located in La Barre-de-Monts in Vendée, was erected during the last quarter of the 19th century. This historic monument marks the entrance of the strait separating the island of Noirmoutier from the continent. It follows an architectural model published by L. Reynaud, characteristic of the metal lighthouses of that time. Today still in operation, it embodies one of the latest examples of metal turret lights of this type.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 3 October 2012, the lighthouse of Fromentine is protected for its architecture and role in maritime signage. Its metal structure, based on the public domain, reflects the technical advances of the late 19th century in coastal lighting. The site is located precisely at 4 Rue du Belvedere, in the municipality of La Barre-de-Monts.
The construction of this lighthouse is part of a wider context of securing the Atlantic coasts, essential for maritime trade and fisheries, major activities of the region Pays de la Loire at this time. Lighthouses, like the one at Fromentine, played a crucial role in guiding ships and preventing shipwrecks, thus contributing to local economic development.
