Origin and history

The Great Cardinal Lighthouse is an iconic maritime building of the Morbihan, erected in the 19th century on the Groguéz Rock, on the roadside of the Cardinals. Located southeast of Hoëdic Island, it plays a key role in navigation by signaling the dangerous approach to Quiberon Bay. Its architecture and location on an isolated reef make it a remarkable technical work, adapted to the hostile conditions of the Atlantic.

Remotely controlled from the Goulphar Lighthouse, the Grand Cardinal Lighthouse was listed as a historic monument by order of June 10, 2020, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Its nautical characteristics, such as its white light with grouped flashes (4 shrapnel every 15 seconds) and its 13-mile range, make it an essential landmark for navigators. The site, not accessible to the public due to its isolation, remains a symbol of Breton seaside engineering.

The lighthouse is also known as Groguez on charts, references such as the SHOM 7033. Its history is part of that of Breton lighthouses, marked by technical challenges and strategic importance, especially at events such as the Battle of the Cardinals. The 2020 protection underlines its status as a maritime heritage to be preserved, while integrating modern advances such as remote control.

Available sources, including Wikipedia, Monumentum and data from the Ministry of Culture (Mérimée database), confirm its territorial anchor in the municipality of Hoëdic (code Insee 56085) in Brittany. Although its exact location is difficult to specify (level 5/10 according to Monumentum), its role in securing Quiberon's collisions remains undeniable. No information is available on possible characters related to its construction or history.
