Ensign in wood: inscription by decree of 1 December 1950
Origin and history
Dieppe Pharmacy is a historic monument located in the port city of Dieppe, Normandy. Built in the 18th century, it is distinguished by its wooden sign, a rare and preserved architectural element, which was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 1 December 1950. This type of education reflects the craft and commercial practices of the time, where pharmacies played a central role in public health and the daily lives of the inhabitants.
Dieppe, an 18th century dynamic city, was marked by its harbour activity and flourishing trade. Pharmacies, like the one on Rue de la Barre, were essential places, often located in busy streets to facilitate access to health care. Their presence reflected the growing importance of medicine and remedies in a society where epidemics and diseases were still common. The wooden sign, typical of this period, served both as a signpost and as a trust symbol for customers.
The location of this pharmacy at 4 rue de la Barre is documented in the Mérimée database, although geographical accuracy is considered to be satisfactory a priori (note 6/10). No additional information is available on its operation, owners or architectural evolution over the centuries. The protection of his sign in 1950, however, underscores his heritage interest, as a tangible vestige of Dieppe's medical and artisanal past.
