Origin and history

The cross of St. Helena is a monumental stone cross located in the village of St. Helena, in Lozère (Occitania region). Dated from the first quarter of the seventeenth century, it has been listed in the inventory of historical monuments since 1926. Originally, its base was embedded in the walls of a barn and a garden, before being moved in 1932 to church square to avoid the risk of collapse of adjacent buildings. Today it rests on an octagonal base in Gothic style, and its crusillon bears the date of 1623.

The cross illustrates the importance of religious symbols in rural villages of modern times, where these monuments often served as spiritual and community landmarks. In Lozère, a region marked by a medieval and rural heritage, the crosses of path or place were frequent, reflecting local piety and social organization around the Church. Their preservation, as here, bears witness to their sustainable role in the landscape and collective memory.

According to available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum), the cross belongs to the municipality of St. Helena and is one of the protected elements of the department. His movement in 1932 and his registration in 1926 emphasized his heritage value, linked to his seniority and state of conservation. No information is available on possible sponsors or artisans, or on specific historical events associated with this monument.
