Pierre à petroglyphes, dit Pierre du pas de l'âne: classification by decree of 23 February 1928

Origin and history

La Pierre du pas de l'âne is a megalithic monument located in the Planches-du-Morvan forest on the territory of Lavault-de-Frétoy. This petroglyph, whose exact origin and period of realization remain undetermined, has been recognized for its historical and archaeological interest. It bears the evocative name of "Pierre du pas de l'âne", although the precise reasons for this name are not documented in the available sources.

Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 23 February 1928, this engraved stone bears witness to ancient practices, probably linked to rituals or symbolic markings. Its location in the forest, in an area now integrated with Burgundy-Franche-Comté (former Burgundy region), suggests a human occupation or cultural activities in this area since remote times. The petroglyphs, in general, are often associated with prehistoric or protohistoric societies, but the absence of precise dating for this monument does not allow this hypothesis to be refined.

The location of the Stone of the donkey's step, although known, is considered of poor accuracy (level 5 on a scale of 10), which can make its access or identification difficult for visitors. No information is available on its current accessibility, visiting conditions or any associated services. This monument remains above all a mysterious vestige, protected for its heritage value but still not well known to the general public.
