Origin and history

The Covered Stone of Parigne-le-Pôlin is a megalithic monument located in the wood of Bruon, northwest of the commune of Parigne-le-Pôlin, in the department of Sarthe. This dolmen, whose table collapsed, dates from the Neolithic and illustrates the funeral and architectural practices of that time. Its present state reflects the transformations experienced over the millennia, while maintaining a major archaeological value.

The site was officially recognized for its heritage importance, as evidenced by its classification as historic monuments by order of 16 December 1982. This status protects the building and underlines its role in local and regional history, particularly for the study of prehistoric societies in Pays de la Loire. The Covered Stone is now owned by the municipality of Parigné-le-Pôlin.

From a geographical point of view, the monument is located at the intersection of rural roads 21 and 23, near the Roezé road. Its location in the forest, although difficult to accurately specify (level of accuracy estimated at 6/10), makes it both mysterious and accessible to researchers and visitors. Available sources, such as the Mérimée base or the work of Jean-Paul Henri Berthet, document its existence and megalithic context in the Sarthe.

In Neolithic, dolmens were generally used as collective burials, reflecting complex social organization and beliefs related to death. In the Pays de la Loire region, these monuments were often integrated into forested landscapes or high areas, marking the territory and serving as landmarks for agricultural communities. The Stone covered by Parigné-le-Pôlin is part of this tradition, although its local specificities remain partially documented.

No information is available on detailed archaeological excavations or on-site artifacts. However, his ranking and his mention in specialized books, such as The Discovery of Megaliths in Sarthe (1992), confirm his interest in studies on megalithism. The site remains a silent testimony of the practices and know-how of the Neolithic populations of the Sarthe.
