Pigeon: inscription by order of 24 August 1927

Origin and history

The Pigeonier de Fontvieille is a historical monument located in the commune of Fontvieille, in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône (region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur). This type of construction, typical of rural areas, was originally used to shelter and raise pigeons, an important food and economic resource for local communities. Although its exact date of construction is not specified in available sources, its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of August 24, 1927 underscores its heritage and architectural importance.

Pigeons were often associated with large agricultural properties or seigneuries, because their possession was regulated and reserved for the privileged under the Old Regime. In the Provençal context, these buildings reflect a social and economic organization marked by agriculture, breeding and the exploitation of local resources. Their presence in the rural landscape also reflects traditional construction techniques adapted to the Mediterranean climate. Today, this dovecote, although little documented in the sources, remains a vestige of Fontvieille's built heritage, accessible to the public in unspecified terms.
