Pigeonnier de Bellerive (Case A 24): inscription by order of 7 September 1978
Origin and history
The Pigeonier de Bellerive, located in Villemade (Tarn-et-Garonne), dates from the 18th century and belonged to the farm of the same name, itself attached to the estate of the Château de Piquecos. According to the local legend, the number of niches inside corresponded to the number of hectares owned by the castle. This utility building, at the heart of the farm, illustrates the symbolic and economic importance of dovecotes in the large rural areas of the period.
The structure is distinguished by its four brick arcades, now closed after repeated flooding of the Aveyron. Access to the first floor, reserved for pigeons, is through a ladder, while the walls house terracotta cells designed for nests. A wooden pertuis system, pierced with holes, connects the roof to the lantern, allowing the ventilation and access of birds. These developments reflect rural construction techniques adapted to seigneurial needs.
Ranked a Historical Monument by order of 7 September 1978, the Pigeon of Bellerive bears witness to the agricultural and architectural heritage of Occitanie. Its inscription highlights its historical value, linked to feudal organization and 18th century agricultural practices. The approximate location (3770 Route de Bordeaux, Villemade) and its current state remain partially documented, with geographical accuracy considered mediocre (note 5/10).
