Pigeonnier de Geffrou : inscription by order of 22 August 1949
Origin and history
The Geffrou dovecote, located in Matha in Charente-Maritime, is a 17th-century building. This monument, of square shape with a four-paned roof, once depended on an old mill. It illustrates the rural architecture of the time, where pigeons often served as a symbol of prestige for landowners or lords.
The building was listed as historic monuments on 22 August 1949, recognizing its heritage value. This official protection underlines its importance in the local architectural heritage. Today, there remains a testimony of the agricultural and social practices of the region in the seventeenth century, a period marked by an economy still largely agrarian and feudal.
