Facades and roofs (Case A 323): inscription by decree of 23 July 1973
Origin and history
The Paillan pigeon house, located in Lussan, Occitanie, dates from the 1st quarter of the 19th century. It is probably built at the same time as Lalanne Castle, on which it depends. This monument is distinguished by its rare type in the region, marking the end of the traditional local construction. Its architecture includes a ground floor open on four sides, with low arches except to the west, and access to the first floor by an independent staircase located in the neighbouring building.
The first floor of the pigeon house serves as a fruit tree, while a wooden staircase leads to the top floor, dedicated to pigeons. The roof is surmounted by a campanile and an ear of green varnished terracotta. This monument has been classified as Historic Monuments since 1973, with protection on its facades and roofs.
The Pigeon of Paillan illustrates the importance of pigeons in the agricultural and seigneurial fields of the time. These buildings served both as a symbol of prestige for landowners and as a source of food (meat, eggs) and fertilizer (ficent) for crops. Their architecture often reflected the social status of their owners, while integrating with local farming practices.
