Origin and history

The Pigeonier du Cassou is a historical monument located in Orthez, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, dating from the 18th century. This circular dovecote, built of local stone, stands out for its walls, which are girded six metres high by a lightly protruded cornice and a double genoise under the roof. This one, in the shape of a rounded helmet, is surmounted by a polygonal lantern, typical of the rural architecture of the time.

Inside, the space is divided into two levels: a lower part serving as a tightening and a higher part reserved for pigeons. The latter consists of seven rows of bolts, three of which are square and four cylindrical, designed to house the volatiles. Access to the upper floor was probably through an interior ladder, although it was no longer mentioned as existing today. The monument was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 22 December 1970.

This type of pigeon house reflects the economic and social importance of pigeons in 18th century rural societies. Pigeons, often reserved for nobility or landowners, provided a source of meat and fertilizer, while symbolizing high social status. The approximate location of the dovecote, at 2650 Route de Bayonne à Orthez, is indicated with an accuracy considered "a priori satisfactory" according to the available data.
