Pigeonnier (Case A 55): entry by order of 15 April 1997

Origin and history

The Reynery Pigeon is a historical monument located in Odars, in the department of Haute-Garonne in the Occitanie region. This isolated dovecote is distinguished by its structure based on twin arches, which are supported by square piles. These architectural elements are highlighted by a prominent cornice, while a second cornice, decorated with varnished tiles, overlooks the arcades. A third cornice, located below the entrance openings, completes this device designed to prevent rodents from accessing the building. The interior walls of the pigeon house are entirely lined with ceramic bolts, niches intended to house the pigeons.

Ranked a Historical Monument by decree of 15 April 1997, the pigeon-maker Reynery is a typical example of the rural constructions dedicated to the breeding of pigeons, a common practice in the French countryside until the 19th century. These buildings were used not only to produce meat and eggs, but also to harvest the fiente, used as a natural fertilizer for crops. The pigeon-maker Reynery, with its preserved architectural features, bears witness to this tradition and the ingenuity of the techniques used to protect crops and animals.

The monument is located precisely at the following address: 810 Route de la Borie, 31450 Odars. Although the practical information about his visit or current use (rent, guest rooms) is not detailed in the available sources, his registration under the Historical Monuments guarantees his protection and his heritage appreciation. The data available are mainly from the Merimée database and the Monumentum platform, supplemented by geographical and administrative information.
