17th century Pigeonnier : inscription by decree of 26 June 1946
Origin and history
The dovecote located at 7 Rue de Corbeaulieu in Venette is a 17th century monument. This type of construction, typical of the French countryside, was mainly used to raise pigeons, an activity reserved for the nobility or landowners. These buildings were often symbols of prestige and economic power in rural areas.
In modern times, dovecotes played an important role in the social and agricultural organization of villages. Not only was it possible to produce meat and eggs, but it was also possible to use the fat as fertilizer for crops. In the Hauts-de-France, a region with a high level of agricultural activity, these constructions reflected the importance of the exploitation of local land and resources.
