Origin and history

The dovecote located two kilometres southwest of Lassalle, on the territory of the municipality of Moissac (Tarn-et-Garonne), is a listed historical monument. Although its construction period is not specified in available sources, its status as a Historic Monument indicates an official recognition of its heritage value. Geographic data locate it approximately near Caylus, in a rural area characteristic of Occitanie.

Pigeons were common constructions in the French countryside, often associated with agricultural or seigneurial fields. In the south-west, these buildings served as both a food reserve (meat and fertilizer) and a symbol of social status. Their presence reflected the economic and hierarchical organization of rural communities, where pigeon rearing was sometimes reserved for the privileged.

This monument is therefore part of a vernacular heritage linked to traditional agricultural practices.
