Seigneurs Avogari-Gentile - Local noble family Controlled Brando and his religious heritage.

Origin and history

The Pisan Chapel is a religious building located in the hamlet of Castello in Brando, Haute-Corse. It is attached to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the parish church of Brando, and is part of a medieval religious ensemble including also the chapel Santa Maria delle Nevi. These three buildings are located at Parocchia, a major historical and religious site in the municipality.

The Pisan chapel is distinguished by part of its southern wall, in the nave, which supports frescoes of the fourteenth century. These monumental paintings, depicting Saint Catherine and a monumental Christ, have been classified as Historical Monuments since 1958. They bear witness to Brando's artistic and religious importance in the Middle Ages, then under the influence of the Avogari-Gentile lords, who dominated the region of Cap Corse from the twelfth century.

Brando, the capital of the old piève of the same name, was a strategic fief controlled by the Avogari-Gentile. These lords built several castles and fortifications, including Castello, located near the chapel. The rivalry between neighbouring fiefs, like that of Erbalunga, marked local history, with armed conflicts continuing until the sixteenth century. The Pisan chapel, by its art and location, embodies this period of seigneurial power and religious development in Cape Corsica.

The religious complex of Parocchia, of which the Pisan chapel is part, reflects the sacred medieval Corsican architecture, mixing pisane and genoese influences. The nearby chapel Santa Maria delle Nevi dates back to the 9th and 10th centuries and houses 14th-century frescoes and a 16th-century altarpiece. These buildings illustrate the continuity of Marian worship in the region, as well as the evolution of artistic styles between the early Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Over the centuries Brando and its hamlets, such as Erbalunga or Lavasina, became major religious and commercial centres in Cape Corsica. The Pisan chapel, although less known than other monuments of the commune, remains a precious testimony of this history, preserving medieval works of art unique in Corsica. Its classification as Historic Monuments underscores its heritage and cultural importance.
