Origin and history

The shop and garden of Pissarro, located in Éragny-sur-Epte in the Hauts-de-France, is a property acquired by the painter in 1892 after having rented it in 1884. This place, composed of a brick house with stone frames and a slate roof, as well as a barn transformed into a workshop, became a high place of impressionist painting. The house, of square plan, has lost its original interior decoration, but retains a structure characteristic of the period.

The barn, renovated in 1893, housed stables and sheds on the ground floor, while the floor was dedicated to the shop in Pissarro. The latter was equipped with a huge window in the middle of a 3 meters opening on the north wall, and a window with views of the orchard to the west. Access to the workshop was via an outdoor covered staircase, a typical layout of the artists' workshops of this period.

This place was a major source of inspiration for Pissarro and a meeting point for many Impressionist artists, such as Cézanne, Monet, Sisley, Renoir and Mirbeau. The workshop and the house of Eragny, registered as a Historic Monument in 1998, symbolize the importance of this artistic current in the region. The property, acquired by borrowing from Monet, also illustrates the close links between these painters.

Today, the workshop and the garden, protected for their heritage value, recall Pissarro's artistic heritage and its influence on its peers. Their preservation allows us to understand the environment in which these major works of Impressionism were created, while offering a material witness to the life and work of these artists at the end of the 19th century.
