Origin and history

Place des Arcades in Réalville is a historical monument located in the Tarn-et-Garonne department in the Occitanie region. It is distinguished by its typical architecture, with wood-paned houses surrounding a central square. These buildings, dating back to the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, have galleries supported by cornes on the ground floor, a style characteristic of the urban constructions of this period in southwestern France. The square, as well as the facades and roofs of the buildings surrounding it, were protected by an order of inscription dated 12 October 1948, thereby recognizing their heritage value.

This type of square, with its arcades, played a central role in the social and economic life of small French cities. In the 17th century, public squares served as a market place, gathering and exchange, while often sheltering artisanal or commercial activities on the ground floor. The wooden galleries, in addition to providing weather protection, reflected local craftsmanship and traditional construction techniques. In Occitanie, these public spaces were hot spots where the inhabitants, merchants and travellers crossed, contributing to the vitality of the villages.

The inscription of the Place des Arcades in 1948 under the title of Historical Monuments underlines its architectural and urban importance. This protection aims to preserve the integrity of the facades and roofs, as well as the overall harmony of the square, witness to the stylistic evolutions over three centuries. Today, this site remains a remarkable example of the regional built heritage, illustrating both the late medieval heritage and the architectural adaptations of modern times. The location of the square, in the heart of Réalville, makes it a key element of the town's historic urban landscape.
