Origin and history
The square Louis-XIII, located in the heart of Place des Vosges in Paris, is the largest green space in the 4th arrondissement. Ranked a historic monument in 1954, it extends over 12,706 m2 and is bordered by rows of trees, with four fountains fed by Ourcq. An equestrian statue of Louis XIII, designed by Charles Dupacy and Jean-Pierre Cortot, reigns in its centre. This square is a historic vestige of Parisian urban planning, accessible via the metro stations Chemin Vert and Bastille.
The story of the square dates back to 1682 when the first gated garden was built around the equestrian statue of Louis XIII, erected in 1639. In 1783 lime trees were planted there, but the garden was destroyed during the French Revolution, as was the original bronze statue. In the 19th century, the square was rebuilt with the fountains of Jean-Pierre Cortot and a new equestrian statue of Louis XIII, installed between 1825 and 1829. In 1976, the square was remodeled, with the replacement of trees by Crimean lime trees and Indian chestnut trees.
The square Louis-XIII bears the name of King Louis XIII (1601-1643), in tribute to his reign. Its current layout reflects the successive transformations of the Place des Vosges, former Place Royale, and its integration into the Parisian heritage. The 19th century works and subsequent renovations have preserved this emblematic place, which remains an area of relaxation and historical memory in the heart of Paris.
