Plank known as Roman bridge (cad. non-cadastre, public domain, meeting with sections A, C and G of the cadastre): classification by order of 29 January 1996

Origin and history

The Planche sur la Couze, called the "Roman bridge", is a historical monument located in Saint-Léger-la-Montagne, Haute-Vienne. Although its exact origin remains unknown, it is the only dry passage between Sauvagnac and Saint-Léger until 1874. Its structure consists of five arches of stone slabs resting on piles of rough stones, typical of an old construction but whose precise dating escapes historians.

Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 29 January 1996, this bridge now belongs to the public domain of the commune. Its name as a "Roman bridge" is more a local tradition than a formal archaeological certificate. The approximate location and the absence of precise cadastration add to its mystery, while stressing its historical role as a mandatory crossing point for centuries.

The bridge illustrates the ingenuity of old construction techniques, adapted to local geographical constraints. Its late classification (1996) reflects a recent heritage awareness, aimed at preserving a modest but emblematic work of the Limousin rural heritage. No source mentions any specific character or event related to its construction or past use.
