Origin and history
The municipal factory of Métabief is an industrial complex built in the 4th quarter of the 19th century on the commune of Métabief (Doubs, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté). Located on the edge of the Bief Rouge, a tributary of the Doubs, it replaces a 13th century mill destroyed by fire. The project was launched in 1879 by the municipality, and work was completed in 1882. As early as 1883, the site was rented for two activities: a sawmill mill (until 1985) and a mill mill (until 1960), which operated hydraulic power via a dam and canals.
The factory consists of a main building divided into four bodies: woodworking workshop, flour mill, housing and stables-remises. It still retains its original equipment, such as saws, sorting machines, grinding wheels and turbines. The site, decommissioned after 1985, was listed in the Historic Monuments on 17 June 1992, protecting the factory, the leak canal, an annex building and the remaining machinery. Since 2012, it has been home to a Meunerie Museum, which values this rural industrial heritage.
This complex illustrates the ingenuity of 19th century communal factories, often run by municipalities to boost the local economy. Its functional architecture and dual vocation (wood and flour) reflect the needs of a rural community undergoing industrial change. The preservation of machinery and hydraulic structures makes it a rare testimony of the traditional hydraulic industry in Franche-Comté.
Owned by the commune of Métabief, the site is located 36 Rue du Village, near Saint-Antoine. Its classification also covers water retention, the dam and its valves, as well as the technical installations still in place. Today, it combines heritage conservation and cultural mediation, offering an overview of the artisanal and mechanical know-how of the past.
