Origin and history

La Maison Poch is an emblematic bastide located in Sauve, Gard department, Occitanie region. Dating from the 15th century, it is distinguished by its architecture typical of the southern bastides, although some parts, such as its carved lintel, might come from an older re-use. This lintel, overtaking the entrance door, is the most remarkable element of the monument, inscribed as historical monuments by order of 30 January 1956.

According to the local tradition, the Maison Poch would have been a dependency of the monastery of the abbots of Sauve, although its current construction seems to date rather from the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries. The lintel, on the other hand, has a bas-relief decor composed of eight geminied arcatures and various motifs (trilobes, quadrilobes, palmettes, birds), suggesting a funeral origin, perhaps linked to an abbot of Sauve. This architectural fragment, of a late style, bears witness to the religious and artistic history of the region.

Today, Maison Poch is located in the heart of Sauve, more precisely at 11 Rue Saint-Jean or Grande-Rue, according to the sources. Although its current use (visit, rental, accommodation) is not specified, its lintel classified it as a protected local heritage. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated as fair (level 5/10), reflecting the historical uncertainties surrounding this charismatic monument.
