Polissoir (Case C 24): inscription by order of 14 September 1979
Origin and history
The Polissoir de Penin is a megalithic monument dated to the Neolithic period, marked by the emergence of agriculture and the first polished stone tools. This type of stone, often associated with tool polishing activities or rituals, reflects the technical and cultural practices of local prehistoric communities. Originally located in Penin, in the present department of Pas-de-Calais (Hautes-de-France), it was moved near the church of the village, without the precise reasons for this displacement being mentioned in the available sources.
Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 14 September 1979, the polisher is now protected under the French archaeological heritage. The Mérimée sheet indicates that it is located in the cadastre section C, parcel 24, and belongs to the commune of Penin. Its exact location, near the rue de Maizières, remains approximate according to GPS data, with an accuracy considered "passible" (note 5/10). This monument illustrates the importance of neolithic remains in northern France, where polishers were often integrated into community networks or gathering places.
Available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) do not provide details on any archaeological excavations or on the specific use of this polisher. However, its protection in 1979 underlines the desire to preserve this fragile heritage, representative of the first traces of social and technical organization in Western Europe. The monument is not explicitly mentioned as accessible to the public, and no information is given on any tourist visits or enhancements.
